The State has the burden to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a defendant committed a crime. In order to do this, they have to be able to present a case that not only makes sense but also addresses all of the questions that the jury should have. If the State presents a theory with holes in it, the Defense should not only poke at those holes but step through them and widen them out.
