Successful Trial Lawyers are not Simply Born, They are Made.

I just just finished training a a group of some of the best lawyers in America. This time it was in Maine. You may wonder why a criminal defense lawyer in St. Paul would be interested in doing such a thing. Actually, the answer is quite simple.

Being a compelling and successful trial lawyer is not something you are born with, it is something the you hone with education, experience and constant training. Sure, going to law school is just fine for the basics but something can only be done by doing. At the same time, receiving advanced training and experience and taking to the next level is something that only a rare few do. Sometimes it is about keeping up with the law and how it might apply in certain circumstances. At the same time, nothing compares to trial advocacy training.

It continues to be a rare privilege to teach trial advocacy for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. NITA is one of the pre-eminent advocacy programs in the world. We teach lawyers from all over the country to reach those rare ranks of some of the lawyers in the country. This time around, we are working with a bunch of amazing and extraordinarily experienced and talented lawyers across the state of Maine.

You don’t just graduate from law school and magically become a great trial lawyer. It takes so much more.

You might think that this may be helpful for the students but how does it help the trial advocacy teachers? Simple, I get better every single time I teach. The smart teacher is always a student. I watch what these lawyers are doing and I help them become more persuasive, more compelling. At the same time, I am constantly reflecting on what works and what doesn’t. Most importantly, I constantly strive to be better, more effective. It’s what my clients have come to expect, to demand. Most importantly, it is what they deserve.
