What You Will Need to Get Your Car Out of Impound?

In order to get your vehicle out of impound and you are the registered owner, you will need a couple of different things with you. *

  • Proof of Ownership: Title, Bill of Sale or Lease Agreement

  • A valid Photo ID: (Permit or Driver's License, State issued ID, Military ID or Consulate ID, Passport). A valid DL is needed to drive the car from the lot

  • Proof of Insurance: Insurance must be current with an up to date insurance card or insurance binder for that vehicle. You can email the Impound yard with this documentation at SPPD-Impound@ci.stpaul.mn.us. You can also fax them at 651-298-4938.

  • Payment of all towing and storage fees

* If your car is being held pending investigation or if the State is seeking forfeiture, you may not be able to simply pick up your car.

If you are not the registered owner you will need

  • Personal Vehicle - A notarized letter with a copy of the owners photo ID. Or you must have the same last name and address on your drivers license.

  • Rental or Company owned vehicle - The company must be notified by the driver and will only be released with faxed authorization from the company.

  • Repossession - An Affidavit of Repossession (or Writ of Replevin) and a lien holder's card are required in order to release a vehicle to a lien holder or their authorized representative- NO EXCEPTIONS!

How Much Will It Cost to Get My Vehicle Out of Impound?

While costs can sometime vary, you should expect multiple fees including towing and storage charges.

Typically, if your vehicle was towed:

Be on Notice of Possible Auction

The City of St. Paul will notice the registered owner and the address on their license within 5 days of receipt of the car. In the event that the car is not picked up within 15 days of notice, it may be sold at auction.
